Artist Statement:

“Before she was a translator, a mother, or a traitor, Malintzin was a commodity. This piece strips away the historical mythos to confront the visceral reality of her life: she was a woman in bonds. By highlighting her status as a prisoner and an enslaved person, the work explores the impossible position of an individual forced to navigate her survival through the very hands that bound her.”
